New York in April

Earlier this month I took a mini vacation down to New York to visit my sister.  Aside from the crappy flight with Delta, my time in New York was fantastic! It was actually the first time my sister and I hung out alone together since being adults. Imagine. She is 37 and I am 42 and we haven’t just hung out together alone since we were probably kids.

I am super happy we did. Its like a new found life long friend. Weeee!

With the weather being just a little bit warmer than it was here in Toronto that weekend, it was absolutely perfect, and really helped me to rest and relax.

We did a lot of walking, a lot of talking, a lot of eating of great food!

We went to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Red hook for Drag Queen Karaoke, the High Line, and to a park in Chelsea.

I got a lot of rest except for the last night there.

I love my sister!

Here are some great pics from that weekend.

Frustration

Don’t you just love when you get involved in something that at first you do just for fun, then you decide you want to become more serious about it?  YES, me too!!

Don’t you just hate it when there are obstacles that make it harder to progress? YEAH, me too!!

I have been studying Muay Thai for about 2.5 years now. I have gone through periods of great growth, plateau periods, and periods where I start to decline due to injuries, being ill or bouts of depression.

I have just started coming out of a decline period…and its so frustrating that my work schedule doesn’t allow me to do any of my instructor’s evening classes. So, I am limited to one weekday and one weekend day. If I can at least stay consistent in those two classes for 1-2 months I know I will be able to grow in MT again. But I know that in April I am going away for one weekend. And I have also learned, that if I take one Saturday a month where I don’t do much of anything and just relax and do self-care, everything else becomes that much better.

I also really want to start learning Jujitsu, but it’s really hard to find a school that has the most convenient location and schedule together which matches with my work  availability.

All that fits my schedule now is boxing. This could be good to learn too, so I may have to go that route for now.

I guess it’s just a matter of being patient, and when a schedule change in my work life opens up, I immediately will jump on the chance to fit something in that I want.

A few months ago, I had a schedule change on a Thursday evening…but the change still wasn’t allowing for the class start time (6pm i think) for my instructor’s Thursday night Muay Thai class. That class started too early still. But I took the chance to bring back my Flamenco Dancing, because that class starts at 8pm;  allows me to still get there.

Oh well. As long as I get to do the things I love everything will get better. I should be grateful I can even take part in things that require me to use my body in different high intensity ways!!

WOOHOOO!!! 🙂

Stepping Back

Sometimes we get caught up in our own lives, our own drama. When that happens, everything and everyone else around us seems to be more annoying….and then we fail to see that someone else actually may need help (more help than we need ourselves).

I stepped back a little last night, and instead of getting angry about a situation I realized that this was actually a moment to reach out and help a colleague (this was a sign that they needed guidance and optimism that there would be a turning point for the positive).

When is the last time you were able to do this (I cant get my question mark to work…hence no question mark after my questions right now).

Yes…everything is not always about you…sometimes we all need to step back to realize this. Its easy to get caught up in trivial things, or things we do not necessarily have control over.

Being able to do this type of thing will decrease your stress, and believe it or not, help you stay focused. This in turn helps you achieve all your goals whether health and fitness based, career based, or other.

Have a great day!

Sounds at the Gym

Its not always a bad thing to have no one to train in the morning on a day when normally you have quite a few. I get a chance to just sit back, and listen and watch what is happening in our gym. RELAXATION 🙂

via Daily Prompt: Sound

Today my entire schedule got turned upside down, so I am not training any morning people and I have a late evening tonight.

Its not always a bad thing to have no one to train in the morning on a day when normally you have quite a few. I get a chance to just sit back, and listen and watch what is happening in our gym. RELAXATION 🙂

Right now the two owners of CoreFit have clients they are training. I can hear the sounds of conversations …and it sounds like I will be gaining a client by referral. Bonus!

I also hear the sounds of weights being lifted…love that sound!

And I hear the sound of Rock music being played in the background…again Love that sound!

I am now going to continue to listen to the sounds of this morning as I do some online work.

Enjoy your day! 🙂

Why did I write The Shyness Guide?

I have not read the Shyness Guide, but I have read the Bird Catcher and Skol! Both great books in my opinion. Check out Alan Conrad

Alan Conrad

rscn4338Now that I’ve published the new edition of The Shyness Guide (the paperback anyway), it’s time to do my first real post for this blog.

On the book’s landing page here, I’ve explained my credentials for writing the book. But why, you may ask, did I feel a need to write another shyness book when there are already over 600 about shyness, introversion, social anxiety, etc? How could there be anything left to say?

Well, because shyness is almost never understood the way I understand it.

My understanding is instinctual. From the day I entered kindergarten I was acutely aware of how different I was. In my novel The Birdcatcher, Chris Stone explains that this way:

I remembered my own first day at school, that morning in September, 1953, when I crouched in a corner of the school’s old brick walls, already instinctively protecting my back, waiting for the doors…

Believe it or not, YES it can happen!

Take home message…..be optimistic! If you don’t know how to change something you don’t like, never give up and think it’s not achievable. Someone out there will know how to make it happen. Ask for help and everything CAN change.

One day I was talking to one of my dance teachers. The topic of how some people seem to always have a physical feature their entire life came up. A lot of people think if they have always had a certain shape that its impossible to change that shape.

I will say, we definitely do have part of our shape that was genetic..but when it comes to fat and muscle….you don’t ever have to think you will always be stuck looking the same way.

I have a client who I have been working with for close to 5 years now. She was one who had a wider type of hip shape. She and her friends said she has always had those hips. One of her friends who now also trains with me came to me because after my client got pregnant, I got her back into shape. She lost all her baby fat and went beyond where she was before getting pregnant. Nothing about her hips is the same! She is slender all the way down her entire body and has muscle she continues to build. Her friend said she wanted results like that especially in her legs. I told her, I can definitely make that happen!

Interestingly enough, after a few months of training the next client, she too got pregnant. Because she continued to train with me after finding out, she continues to maintain a strong body, and nothing from the back view looks like she is pregnant. You only see it from the side profile. Imagine being pregnant and fit!! From what I understand, its a pretty amazing feeling. This client said this pregnancy is very different from her first one.

I have another client who is in her 70s. I have managed to get 20lbs off of her and she has maintained that over the last 2 years. She gave me a testimonial, and one of many things she said is, since she was a kid, she always had thighs that rubbed together since she can remember. She never thought it was possible to change that…..low and behold…one day while training with me, she stated that out of the blue one day she realized her legs were no longer rubbing! She was super excited! ,

Take home message…..be optimistic! If you don’t know how to change something you don’t like, never give up and think it’s not achievable. Someone out there will know how to make it happen. Ask for help and everything CAN change.
